Technology in UC Library
UC Library provides the community with a variety of technology resources and services, including computers, photocopiers and a scanner.
Library Computers
UC Library offers a variety of computing services to the community. Our services compliment the wider array of technology services offered on campus.
Learn More About Computing @ UC

Reference Computers
UC Library provides 14 Dell (IBM compatible) computers dedicated for research purposes in the Reference area.
Access
- Access is restricted to current UC students, faculty and staff by use of a login
Use
- The reference computers are intended for using the library's research tools and resources, and not for coursework-related writing or presentations
- Reference computers are not loaded with word processing, spreadsheet, or presentation software (e.g. Microsoft Office)
- The Laptop Lending Program offers students computers that allow both research and completion of coursework-related writing and presentations (details below)
- Reference computers include:
- Internet access
- Web browser
- Access to network storage space
- USB ports for use with storage devices (e.g. thumb drives)
- CD-ROM drives
Laptop Lending Program
- The Laptop Lending Program makes Dell and IBM laptop computers available to current UC students for use in the Library
- Laptops access the Internet using the UC wireless network and include Microsoft Office software
Public Use Computer
- UC Library provides one computer, unconnected to the UC network, that may be used by community members and visitors
- Located on the second floor at the top left of the staircase, this computer provides:
- Access to the Internet and a web browser
- Printing for $0.10 per page
- Not available: CD-ROM or DVD functions
- Not available: word processing, spreadsheet, presentation or desktop publishing software
Printing from Library Computers
- Reference computers and laptops use the printers located in the Reference area
- Printing from either the reference computers or laptops deducts from your Student Print account
- Duplex printing (double-sided printing) is the default
- Personal laptops do not print in the Library

- Go to File > Print
- Select either the Properties or Preferences button
- Select the Finishing tab
- Uncheck "Print on both sides"
UC Wireless Network
- The UC wireless network is a service of IITS, Integrated Information and Technology Services
- The UC wireless network is available in the Library
- Laptops used in the Laptop Lending Program access the Internet using the UC wireless network
- UC students, faculty and staff may access the Internet in the Library from personally owned laptops using the UC wireless network
- Use of the UC wireless network is restricted to current UC students, faculty and staff by use of a login
Personal Laptops & UC Wireless Network
- The UC wireless network is a service of IITS, Integrated Information and Technology Services
- To use the UC wireless network you need a laptop with a functional Network Interface Card (NIC), also called an Ethernet card, that is 10, 100, or 1000 megabit
- Most personal laptops are compatible with the UC wireless network without extra setup
- Contact the UC Computer Help Desk for assistance configuring your personal laptop for use with the UC wireless network
How to Use the UC Wireless Network in the Library
Library Lending Laptops
- Start the laptop
- The laptop will automatically detect the UC wireless network, called UC_Open
- When you open the web browser, you will get a UC page requesting you enter a username and password
- Enter your UC Student Account username and password (same login you use to access uticaonline (WebCT), UC Webmail, and lab computers)
Personal Laptops
- Start your laptop
- Your laptop should detect the UC wireless network, UC_Open, automatically
- If your laptop does not detect the UC wireless network automatically, contact the UC Computer Help Desk for assistance
- Select UC_Open from the list of available network connections
- Open your web browser of choice
- Your browser should display a UC page requesting you enter a username and password
- Enter your UC Student Account login (the same username and password you use to access uticaonline (WebCT), UC Webmail, and student lab computers)
Scanner
- A scanner, along with Adobe Acrobat Professional software, is available on one of the Reference computers
- Any UC student, faculty or staff member may use the scanner
- You may access your Network storage space or use a storage device
- If you need help scanning, please ask for help at the Reference Desk
Photocopiers
UC Library offers two photocopiers, located on the first floor of the Library, directly behind the staircase:
- Photocopies are $0.10 per page and the machines accept coins and $1 bills
- Change is available at the Circulation Desk
- Anyone may use the photocopiers
Typewriter
A typewriter is available for use by anyone, located on the first floor in the Science area
