The Director of Residence Life at Utica College serves as a senior staff member within the division of Student Affairs while also maintaining director responsibility for the overall leadership, development, supervision, administration, and management of a growing Residence Life program. The director is responsible for the programmatic and administrative operation of seven residence halls, including all housing assignments, billing, as well as supervision of approximately1, 050 residential students. The position includes daily supervision, staffing, and management of the Residence Life Office, including budgetary responsibilities. Several College-owned off-campus properties are also managed by the director. This position plays a key role in helping the College achieve its commitment to individual student attention by creating and maintaining a student-centered environment. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Creates and implements the departmental goals.

• Supervises the Office of Residence Life, an Assistant Director, (who manages room assignments and related housing function), professional hall directors and secretarial staff, and serves as second-level supervisor for resident assistant staff as well as work studies (who staff the front desk, assist with office coverage and student mail distribution).

Coordinates and executes staff leadership development training for resident directors professional staff.

Coordinates and executes staff leadership development training including an annual fall week-long RA orientation, a three-day Winter Workshop, and monthly in-services for resident assistant paraprofessional staff.

Manages the seven residence halls, including coordination of room assignments (returning and new students), all related billing, and supervision of approximately 1,050 residential students.

Serves as primary manager for incidents related to residential students’ infractions of the Code of Conduct, as well as crises related to residential students’ general health and safety.

Coordinates staff that manages mail and package distribution for our residential students.

Provides input for the room rates as well as estimates the residential fall and spring occupancy projections. Collects and maintains data corresponding to retention/attrition of residential students.

Accountable for the forecasting and management of $500,000 annual operating budget including staff salaries.

Develops, after gathering student input, a list of needed projects or upgrades/improvements to the halls. Works closely with the Director of Facilities Management, Vice President for Student Affairs, and Vice President for Financial Affairs to assess the projects, estimate the costs, and possibly assist with supervising the projects. Budget for such improvements is separate form the annual operating budget.

Serves as liaison with Academic Support Services, Student Financial Services, Student Affairs, Athletics, Admissions, Marketing and Communication, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Dining Services, Student Activities, International Education, Environmental Health & Conservation, Campus Safety, Graduate and Extended Studies, and Alumni & Parent Relations, among other College offices.

Updates Residence Life Resident Assistant Manual, provides input for the UC Crisis Management Plan, and assists with annual revisions of numerous other publications related to the development such as the College Catalog and the Student Handbook, as well as various Admissions pieces.

Revises, maintains and continuously updates the College website regarding Residence Life information, policies, procedures, photographs, etc.

Serves as the landlord for the College’s off campus properties (housing for coaches, house for Physical Therapy master’s students, and two international student properties).

Serves as pre-hearing officer and Administrative Hearing Officer in the student discipline system. Assists the Associate Dean of Students with supervision of the Residence Life staff’s work as part of the system.

Serves as an advocate and resource for the College by speaking with prospective students and their parents at various Admissions tours and open houses, as well as an assortment of orientations sessions.

Advises student leaders via the Residence Hall Association, and/or other clubs/organizations.

Recommends reconfiguration and related applications of the Banner student information system for the department as well as within the division of Student Affairs.

Chairs the Move-In Day Committee, coordinating all residence hall move in processes.

Serves on various committees, including, but not limited to: Student Processes Committee, Orientation Committee, Campus Safety Committee, Diversity Committee, and Committee for Student Success, and Students of Concern Group.

Performs other duties and/or responsibilities as assigned SUPERVISES:

Supervises and evaluates a departmental team of one Assistant Director, four professional resident hall directors, two full-time secretarial staff, 31 paraprofessional resident assistant staff, and 40+ work study students

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree in college student development (or related field) required. Minimum of four years experience with residence hall operations required. Ability to work with, supervise, and appreciate a diverse College student population is vital for success.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Experience and ability to hire, supervise, and evaluate a diverse student/professional staff is necessary. Exceptional organizational, managerial and delegation skills required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Working knowledge of MicroSoft Word and Excel required. Working knowledge of Banner system preferred. Proven record of budgetary and administrative skills essential. Ability to work a flexible schedule required. Must possess a valid NYS driver’s license and be willing and able to drive for College business as required.
