- Utica College will screen Fear and Trembling, a film directed by Alain Corneau about a girl trying to make the seamless transition into a new country; the catch? Belgium - the country where the girl grew up - and Japan – the country of her ancestry – embrace widely divergent social mores. This comedic and heartbreaking film will be screened in Macfarlane Auditorium Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. The film is free and open to the public.

The film is about one young woman’s journey to become the “perfect Japanese woman” after moving away and returning to Japan years later. She quickly learns after she’s hired as an interpreter at Yumimoto, a quintessential Japanese corporation, that there is a pecking order that needs to be followed or serious consequences are faced.

New York Times critic A.O. Scott’s review of the film says Corneau “turns the conflict of cultures into a psychodrama that is at once lighthearted and intense.” This is an enjoyable film that explores the differences between cultures, and the consequences for ultimately not knowing one’s place in the office ranks.
