SIX PIONEERS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS – BENKWITT TABBED AS CONFERENCE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR


Six student-athletes from the Utica College football team were named to 2009 Empire 8 All-Conference Teams released Monday. Freshman quarterback Andrew Benkwitt was named the Conference’s Rookie of the Year, while senior classmates Eric Kahl and Pete Vano earned first team status for the first time in their careers. Senior wide receiver Cody Elliot was a second team selection along with junior defensive end Tracy Branch, and sophomore left tackle Tyler Olles was an honorable mention.

UTICA COLLEGE & SUNYIT ADVANCE TO FINALS OF 2009 UC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT


The Utica College women's basketball team defeated visiting Rutgers-Camden 67-50 in the first round of the 2009 Utica College women's basketball tip-off tournament at the Clark Athletic Center Friday night. Utica junior guard Devon Croll led all scorers with 23 points, while classmate Jessica Berry poured in 17 and grabbed 12 rebounds, marking her second straight double-double. MEN'S HOCKEY BATTLES FROM BEHIND BUT FALLS SHORT AT #13 NEUMANN


The Utica College men's hockey team (2-2-1) scored two of the game's final three goals but came up just short, falling 5-4, in ECAC Men's West Conference play against nationally-ranked No. 13 Neumann University Friday night. Sophomore Brian Gibbons netted two goals and added one assist for UC, while freshman Evan Chlanda added one goal and one assist. The Pioneers return to action on the road Saturday against conference foe Lebanon Valley College at 3 p.m.
