Katie Kutas (New York Mills, NY) of the women’s field hockey team were the recipients of the award that has been presented to a deserving UC male and female student-athlete every year since 1987.
A panel of coaches and administrators voted for the best suitable athletes based on character, community involvement, athletic and academic accomplishments. The UC senior student-athletes had to also best represent what Miller stood for: courage, perseverance, integrity, and the spirit of competition.
In 2008, Kutas started all 17 games and led the Pioneers in goals (18), points (23), and game-winning goals (three). Kutas, a former Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year, is Utica’s career leader in game-winning goals (15) and ranks second all-time in career points (97) and goals (45). Kutas had her best season in 2006. She set single season records for points per game average (2.44), goals (18), game winning goals (seven), and goals per game average (1.12). Kutas’ seven game-winning goals in 2006 is also an Empire 8 record.
Herring a three-time Empire 8 All-Conference first team selection was also named a 2008-09 Division III Upstate Men’s Basketball Second Team All-star by the ECAC and a NABC Division III All-District East Region second teamer. Herring finished the season ranked third in the conference in steals with 52 and ninth in the E8 in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game. He also finished fourth in the conference in assists with a team-high 109 (4.3 per game). Herring also recorded 17 blocks in 25 games this season. The senior guard leaves some big shoes to fill next season. Herring graduates ranks first on the Utica College all-time assist list with 451 and second on the College’s all-time scoring list with 1,587 career points.
