2009 EMPIRE 8 ALL CONFERENCE TEAMS

ROCHESTER, NY (May 6, 2009) – Junior Michael Bulger (Watertown, NY) and sophomore David O’Connell (Syracuse, NY) of the Utica College men’s lacrosse team were named to the 2009 Empire 8 All-Conference Team released Tuesday by the conference office. Bulger earned second team status, marking his second straight appearance on an all-conference team, while O’Connell earned a spot on the honorable mention list for the first time in his career.

Bulger led UC with a career-high 55 points (37 goals, 18 assists) this season, good for second in the conference, and averaged 3.67 points per game (third in the Empire 8). 55 points ranks sixth on the College’s single season scoring list. 37 goals ranks fifth all-time on the single season goal scoring list and 130 shots in a single season is a new school record. He currently ranks second on the College’s all-time scoring list with 121 career points (85 goals, 36 assists) in 44 games. Matt Donaldson is the school record holder with 219 career points.

David O’Connell ranked second on the team with a career-high 42 points (20 goals, 22 assists) this past season. 22 assists in a single season ranks sixth all-time at UC and 1.47 assists per game was tied for fifth in the conference. He has 66 career points (39 goals, 27 assists) in 28 games played. He scored at least one point in 14-of-15 games this past season, including a season-high five points in the Pioneers’ 14-10 win over Oswego State.

Senior Aaron Benoit (Cazenovia, NY) was named the College’s representative for the Empire 8 Conference Sportsman of the Year Team. One member of each team was named that institution’s representative on the 2009 Sportsman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 emphasizes that “Competing with Honor and Integrity” is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission. These honors have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportsmen.

UC closed out its 2009 campaign with eight wins, which ties the school record for wins in a single season. As a team, UC scored 289 points (175 goals, 114 assists), good for second all-time.
