2009 EMPIRE 8 ALL CONFERENCE TEAMS

ROCHESTER, NY (May 6, 2009) – Sophomore Kim Martin (Prospect, NY) and senior Rinae Olsen (Schenectady, NY) of the Utica College softball team were named to the 2009 Empire 8 All-Conference Team released Tuesday by the conference office. Martin earned first-team status for the second straight season, while Olsen earned a spot on the honorable mention list.

Martin, the Pioneers everyday centerfielder, led UC with a .439 batting average and she set a new school-record with 61 hits, shattering the previous record of 48 set by Amanda Butler (Utica, NY) in 2006. She currently ranks second on the College’s career batting average list with a .447 average over the course of 69 career games. This past season Martin led the team in almost every offensive category including runs score (26), triples (five), total bases (75), stolen bases (11-of-12), hits (61), at bats (139) and she ranked second on the team with 23 RBIs.

Olsen, a senior captain for the Pioneers, capped her four year career with a stellar season which included a career best 39 total hits. She batted .328 in 38 games played and she tacked on 20 RBIs to go along with eight runs scored. She closed out her four year campaign tied atop the College’s all-time games played list with 146. She ranks fourth all-time with 119 career hits, third all-time with 71 RBIs and third all-time with 161 total bases.

Freshman Allison Leach (Westborough, MA) was named the College’s representative for the Empire 8 Conference Sportswoman of the Year Team. One member of each team was named that institution’s representative on the 2009 Sportswoman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 emphasizes that “Competing with Honor and Integrity” is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission. These honors have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportsmen.

Utica wrapped up its season with a 16-22 overall record. 16 wins is tied for sixth most in program-history. Head Coach Pat Mineo closed out his fifth season as the Pioneer’s field general and he now has 88 career victories. After two wins to finish the season, Mineo now sits alone as the College’s all-time winningest softball coach, surpassing former skipper Dave Fontaine, who totaled 86 wins in seven seasons at the helm of the program.

The Pioneers will say goodbye to four seniors in May, including Olsen, Andrea Curley (South Glens Falls, NY), Abby Drew (South Glens Falls, NY) and Kourtney Kupiec (Whitesboro, NY).
