Utica, NY (June 25, 2009) - Four student-athletes from the Utica College women’s water polo team were named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) 2009 Women’s All Academic Team Wednesday. Mary Anne Tomko (Deer Park/Deer Park) earned the highest possible honor by being categorized as “Outstanding” for accumulating a grade point average of 3.71 or higher. Only 19 student-athletes in Division III earned the “Outstanding” distinction.

Teammates Alyssa Cortese (New Hartford/New Hartford), Kristyn Galbraith (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) and Amanda Sulicz (Lake Worth/West Palm Beach, FL) earned “Superior” status for posting a grade point average between 3.41 and 3.70. Sarah Gross (East Brunswick/East Brunswick, NJ) was awarded "Excellent" for registering a grade point average between 3.20 and 3.40.

As a team the Pioneers ranked 15th nationally, just behind Princeton University, with a team cumulative GPA of 3.08.

“The fact we have so many talented and academically gifted athletes proves that water polo is a valuable sport to the academic institution as well as the athletic department of our universities,” says Bryan Kimbell, Executive Director of the ACWPC.

Tomko wrapped up her senior campaign with the Pioneers by playing in 18 games this past season. She netted three goals and added seven assists to go along with 14 steals. Cortese, who was the Pioneers primary sprinter, netted four goals and added two assists in 18 games.

Galbraith, a sophomore three-sport athlete, tied for third on the team with six assists in 2009 and she also added 11 steals. Sulicz, a junior utility player, was the Pioneers top scoring threat with 39 goals and she also ranked second on the team with 30 steals.
