#5 Jackie Vicencio BOX SCORE UTICA, NY (April 4, 2009) - The Utica College women's lacrosse team out shot visiting Elmira 35-12 en route to a 16-3 victory in Empire 8 Conference play on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Saturday. Nine different players scored for UC, including a game-high four goals from senior attack Jackie Vicencio.
With the win the Pioneers improved to 4-3 overall on the year and even their record to 1-1 in conference play. Utica has now won two straight against Elmira and the Pioneers are 5-4 in nine meetings all-time against the Soaring Eagles. They have outscored the EC 105-92 over the course of nine meetings and 13 goals is the Pioneers largest margin of victory ever against Elmira. Elmira has now lost four straight games, including two in conference play, and the Soaring Eagles dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the E8 this season.
EC’s Lindsay Mitchell opened the scoring on the day when she netted her only goal of the contest 1:12 into the first half of action to give the Soaring Eagles a 1-0 lead. UC then rattled off six consecutive goals over the course of 18:46 of play to give UC a commanding 6-1 lead with 8:25 to go in the first half. Freshman Katlyn Banker scored two of UC’s first three goals, while senior Kelly Regan, Jackie Vicencio, Tammy Kohanski and Lily Fleskes also scored for UC.
Jordan Donegan scored with 8:02 to go in the first half to cut the UC lead to just four goals, but that is as close as the Soaring Eagles would get for the remainder of the contest. Senior two-sport star Laura Keating added a goal before the half to give the Pioneers a 7-2 lead headed into the second half of play.
UC outscored EC 9-1 in the second half, including the first seven goals of the half over the course of the opening 14:05 of play. Five different Pioneers netted those seven goals, including two from Vicencio, two from Fleskes, and one each from freshman Kim Rigney, Katlyn Banker and Maria Santucci.
Elmira’s Lauren Mokes scored off a free position shot with just over seven minutes to go in the contest to close out the scoring on the day for the Soaring Eagles. Senior Kelly Jones added her second goal of the season with 5:04 left in the game to give UC a 15-3 lead, before Vicencio netted the final goal of the contest with 1:25 left off an assist from freshman Marissa Hotaling.
The Pioneers earned a 29-20 ground ball advantage on the afternoon and they won 13 of 21 draw controls.
Vicencio led the way with four goals and she currently ranks second on the team with 15 points, while sophomore Lily Fleskes added five points on a season-high three goals and two assists for UC. Freshman Katlyn Banker tied a career-high with four points on three goals and one assist, while senior Kelly Jones added one goal and one assist. Sophomore Julianne Schulteiss added a season-high three assists and she now has 14 points on the year. 2008 Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year Tammy Kohanski scooped up five ground balls, caused three turnovers and added one goal for UC.
Lauren Mokes led the way for the Soaring Eagles with one goal and one assist, while Lindsay Mitchell and Jordan Donegan each registered one goal to round out the scoring for Elmira. Emily Zimmerman picked up three ground balls and added two caused turnovers.
Freshman goalie Shelby Barbay stopped four shots in her fourth career victory in net for UC. Two-sport star Jalene McCulloch made nine saves in net for Elmira.
The Pioneers return to action Sunday when they host reigning conference champion and 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Ithaca College Sunday at 1 p.m. The contest marks the final regular season home game for the Pioneers as they play their final six games of the season on the road. Elmira remains on the road as they travel to Hoboken, NJ to take on conference foe and national power Stevens Institute of Technology Sunday at 1 p.m.
