#5 Jackie Vicencio 2009 EMPIRE 8 ALL CONFERENCE TEAMS UTICA, NY (April 30, 2009) – Three student-athletes from the Utica College women’s lacrosse team have been named to the 2009 Empire 8 All-Conference First Team released Thursday by the conference office. The conference named 12 players to its first team (three attack, four midfield, four defense, one goalie) and among the top 12 players were UC sophomore
Tammy Kohanski (Corcoran/Syracuse), along with senior classmates
Jackie Vicencio (Miller Place/Miller Place) and
Kelly Regan (Massapequa/Massapequa). Three players selected to the first team is a new school record and the Pioneers also tied Stevens and RIT with the most first team selections out of the nine team conference.
The Pioneers closed out their 2009 campaign with an 8-6 overall record, including a 4-4 mark in the conference for the second consecutive season. Also, for the second straight year, UC missed out on a bid to the Empire 8 Conference Tournament by just one game after dropping its last two contests of the regular season and finishing in fifth place overall. As a team the Pioneers set a new school record after averaging 12.21 goals per contest in 14 games played.
Kohanski, a two-time first team selection, finished the season ranked second in the conference with 52 goals. She is one of four players in the E8 to score 60+ points this season and she now ranks second on the College’s all-time scoring list with 150 career points (121 goals, 29 assists). Kohanski needs just 17 points next season to tie Kristy Patchett ’03 as the College’s all-time leading scorer. Kohanski has scored at least one point in every game she has ever played at UC and she is currently enjoying a 31-game scoring streak. She has netted four or more points in 19 games and she has also totaled 67 ground balls over the course of two seasons.
Vicencio is making her third straight appearance on the all conference team. As a sophomore she earned honorable mention and in 2008 she was named to the second team. She will leave Utica ranked tenth on the College’s all-time scoring list with 82 career points and she ranks second all-time with 180 career ground balls. This past season she scored a career-high 21 goals and she had six multi-point contests. She led the team with 46 ground balls and she also caused 20 turnovers.
Regan, a two-sport standout who also earned all-conference on the soccer field this season, earned first team defense after scoring 17 points and adding a team-high 23 caused turnovers. She also scooped up a career-high 41 ground balls, good for second on the team behind Vicencio. In four seasons dawning the blue and orange she scored 51 points (31 goals, 20 assists), grabbed 112 ground balls, caused 58 turnovers, and recovered 67 draw controls.
One member of each team was named to the 2009 Women’s Lacrosse Sportswoman of the Year squad. Empire 8 emphasizes that “Competing with Honor and Integrity” is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportswomen. Senior defender
Ashley Herbert(Hylton/Ballston Lake) was Utica College’s representative on the Sportswoman of the Year team. In four seasons at UC she grabbed 34 ground balls and caused 24 turnovers.
