#19 Brenna Weidman BOX SCORE UTICA, N.Y. - Sophomore Brenna Weidman (Holliston, MA) netted a career-high two goals as the Utica College women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 victory over visiting SUNYIT on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Wednesday night. Senior all conference forward Danielle Smith (Verona, NY) added one goal, while sophomore Chelsea Way (Cuyler, NY) also knocked home her first goal of the season. Amber Comeau (Medford, MA) and Jill Benoit (Liverpool, NY) were each credited with one assist in the victory.
With the win the Pioneers snap a three game losing streak dating back to last season and improved to 1-2 overall on the year. UC has shut out SUNYIT in five of their last seven meetings and the Pioneers have outscored the Wildcats 33-3 dating back to 2002.
Weidman opened the scoring at the 1:28 mark of the opening half when she beat SUNYIT goalie Halie Tyler on the lower left side off a direct kick from 20 yards out. Just over 11 minutes later the Pioneers added its second goal of the night - set up beautifully by sophomore forward Jill Benoit. Benoit made several nifty moves in the box to maintain possession and eventually found a streaking Chelsea Way on the opposite post. Way tapped home the perfectly placed pass for her first goal of the season to give UC a 2-0 lead just 12:36 into the contest.
Danielle Smith added a third goal for UC in the 30th minute after a lead pass from junior Amber Comeau. After the goal, her second of the season, Smith now ranks fifth all-time on the College’s career scoring list with 56 points.
Just under five minutes later Weidman added an insurance goal to seal the victory for the Pioneers. UC outshot the Wildcats 26-3 on the day and junior Monique Schneeberger (Lowville, NY) stopped three shots in the shutout victory.
The Pioneers return to action next Wednesday when they open up Empire 8 Conference play against visiting Hartwick College on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
