#15 Danielle Smith BOX SCORE UTICA, NY - Hartwick's Briana Crow collected a long throw-in in the box and muscled the game-winning goal into the lower right side of the net 4:56 into the first overtime period as the Hawks defeated Utica College 2-1 in Empire 8 Conference play Wednesday night. UC outshot the 'Wick 14-11 but the Hawks took advantage of a Pioneer own goal to steal the conference victory.
With the win the Pioneers dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Hawks evened their record to 2-2 overall and open up conference play with a 1-0 record. UC is now 2-2-1 against Hartwick in the last five meetings between the conference foes.
Utica jumped out of the gates hot and took a 1-0 advantage just 8:52 into the contest when sophomore Jill Benoit collected a rebound from 15 yards out and chipped it over Hartwick goalie Alyssa Rondo’s head into the back of the net. Benoit’s rebound came after senior forward Danielle Smith’s initial shot was punched away by Rondo.
The Pioneers seemed in control of the contest until 3:52 later when Hartwick sent a lob shot into the box and UC’s Cheyenne Chrzanowski attempted to clear the ball but instead accidentally headed it into the back of the net tying the contest up at 1-1.
It was a back and forth battle the rest of the way until the Hawks were able to muster the game-winner just under five minutes into the first overtime period.
The Pioneers return to action Sunday when they travel to Alfred University to take on the Saxons at 1:30 p.m. UC defeated Alfred 6-0 last season.
