Nicole Rodriguez (Jamestown/Jamestown) of the Utica College women’s tennis team was named UC’s 2008 Empire 8 Sportswoman of the Year.
One member of each team in the Empire 8 was named to the institution’s representative on the 2008 Women’s Tennis Sportswoman of the Year Team. Empire 8 emphasizes that “Competing with Honor and Integrity” is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission. The honorees chosen have distinguished themselves and constantly exhibit the characteristics of an outstanding sportswoman.
Rodriguez played in every match this season for the Pioneers. Utica College faced a tough conference schedule that included Empire 8 powerhouse Ithaca College. The Bombers went undefeated and won their fourth consecutive Empire 8 Conference title. Rodriguez’s last victory came on Sept. 19, 2007 against Wells College. She defeated Ali Nolan 6-2, 6-0 in singles competition then teamed up with Juanita Fuentes to defeat Cat Abrego and Paula Goodnough 9-8, 7-1.
