- Primarily through engagement by Dr. KC Choo and CIMIP Executive Director, Dr. Don Rebovich (criminal justice professors at Utica College), Dr. Raymond Choo, of the U. of Texas – San Antonio recently shared with Utica College Criminal Justice/Financial Crime faculty, his proposal to set up a Technical Committee on Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) at IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS). This proposal has recently been approved. IEEE TEMS Technical Committee on Blockchain seeks to facilitate and promote research, education, commercialization, and collaboration on the topic of blockchain and other DLT across different disciplines and countries, with the objective of contributing to the long-term technological competitiveness of blockchain and our society.

It is envisioned that in the next two to three years, the TC will introduce early- and mid-career awards to recognize outstanding researchers who have made a significant contribution to blockchain research and development, innovation, and/or entrepreneurship.

Select experts in blockchain and DLT, have been to invited to join the TC. They will be required to join TEMS (https://www.ieee.org/membership- catalog/productdetail/showProductDetailPage.html?product=MEMTEM014) if they are not already members.

Dr. R. Choo held a meeting regarding Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and reported that the Anti -Human Trafficking Intelligence Initiative (ATII), led by CEO Aaron Kahler, and representatives from Utica College's Financial Crime Program team will co-lead the SIG on cryptocurrency, financial crime investigation (money laundering), and human trafficking. Dr. Rebovich, Aaron Kahler and KC Choo will serve as Co-Chairs of this SIG. The primary responsibility of the SIG is to setting up a global agenda on human trafficking issues along with financial crime investigation and cryptocurrency (Blockchain). This SIG will pursue collaborative research grants and set up an annual seminar or workshop. Utica College representatives and ATII have reached out to subject matter experts and have begun the selection process to populate this SIG. Upon finalization of the appointment of the 12 members of the SIG, a kick-off meeting will be scheduled.
