The Family The de Souto family lives in Vilanova de Ribarteme. Don Antón, the doctor of the village, is still a young man who has always lived in the village, except for the years he spent studying in Santiago. There he married Rosario Seoane, who today is his wife. When they returned together to Vilanova, they already had a son, Henrique, who is about to enter military service. Carme, his sister, is two years younger than he is. But the king of the house is the little one, Lelo, who with his five years, does as he pleases. For being so little, he orders his parents, his grandparents, and even his uncles and cousins, who at times come to visit the head of the family at the family homestead.
The grandfather, Uncle Pepe, as they call him in the village, now is old, but he still is healthy. A few days ago, he celebrated his seventy fifth birthday. It was a day of happiness for Uncle Pepe, because he saw all of his relatives together: children, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, son- in- laws, daughter -in - laws, and friends. All were at the house. After dinner, he told them stories about when he was young, about his godfather who had emigrated to Buenos Aires, about the girlfriends he had had, about his wedding, about the birth and baptism of his first son, about when his wife had died.
When Uncle Pepe became a widower, he had no other hope than that of watching his grandchildren grow up, but he still says that he doesn't want to be buried without sponsoring in baptism a great-great- grandchild.
