UC Professor Selected as Visiting Scholar at Hastings Center

Applied Ethics Scholar Riddle to Discuss Medical Aid in Dying
Christopher Riddle, associate professor of philosophy at Utica College and director of the college’s Applied Ethics Institute, has been selected as a visiting scholar at the prestigious Hastings Center, the premier bioethics research center in the U.S.
Riddle’s areas of research include applied ethics, particularly philosophical issues arising from the experience of disability, and social and political philosophy including the capabilities approach. He earned his doctorate from Queen’s University at Kingston.
He has written several books including Disability & Justice (Lexington, Rowman & Littlefield, 2014) and Human Rights, Disability and Capabilities (Palgrave MacMillan, 2016). He served as editor of From Disability Theory to Practice (Lexington, Rowman and Littlefield, 2018) and has authored numerous journal articles.
Riddle received the coveted Dr. Virgil Crisafulli Distinguished Teaching Award at Utica College in 2018.
He plans to use his time at Hastings to work on his manuscript on medical aid in dying.
The Hastings Center, a nonprofit organization of research scholars, addresses social and ethical issues in health care, science and technology. Located in Garrison, N.Y., it was founded in 1969 by philosopher Daniel Callahan and psychoanalyst Willard Gaylin, making it the oldest independent, nonpartisan, interdisciplinary research institute of its kind in the world.
