Samantha Berry-Sullivan, Reference Librarian/Coordinator of Health Sciences
After graduating from the University at Albany with her Master of Science in Library and Information Science as well as her Master of Arts in English Literature, Samantha managed an organic grocery store for four short months before being hired as a part-time reference librarian for SUNY Adirondack Community College. Samantha learned as much about librarianship, academia, and professionalism as a faculty member as she had learned in her gen-eds as a student in the 2010s. An intense curiosity, love of learning and discourse, and desire to do more pushed Samantha to apply for full-time librarian positions at four-year institutions, ultimately earning her the position as Reference Librarian and Coordinator for Health Sciences at UC. Samantha works with Health Sciences faculty and students to support their research and scholarship, as well as developing outreach opportunities and working on her own scholarship within librarianship and antiracism in academia.
Kimberly Bolton, Assistant Professor Nursing in MSN Leadership program
Kimberly earned her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in leadership and informatics from Grand Canyon University in 2018. She has her Master of Science in Nursing education from Easter New Mexico University. She has been in the healthcare field since 2001, working primarily in emergency and critical care nursing. She has been teaching at Utica since 2018 as an adjunct and curriculum developer, but has recently joined as full-time faculty. She and her family live in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Sarah Burnet-Wolle, Associate Professor of Health Sciences
Sarah has a long and varied history at Utica College. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of Health Sciences. Previously, she taught in and Chaired the Therapeutic Recreation and Aging Studies programs. She also created and Chaired the Wellness and Adventure Education and Chaired the Psychology-Child Life programs. Research interests include healthcare navigation and advocacy for black and brown people, the Village to Village network, and older adults’ social networks. Sarah's PhD is from Penn State in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Management and was funded by a training grant from the National Institute on Aging.

Beckie Child, Professor of Practice - Social Work
Beckie received her MSW from Portland State University in 2009, and hopes to defend her dissertation at Portland State in March of 2022. Her dissertation is on the Health Literacy Needs of People Diagnosed with Mental Illness. Beckie received her B.A. in Elementary Education from Weber State University in 2003. Beckie has been a mental health advocate for individuals and families at the local, state, and national levels. She also has helped start several peer-run programs in multiple states. Beckie taught at PSU's BSW and MSW program for the past eight years.

Beth Haas, Assistant Professor of Chemistry
Beth earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2014 from the University of Michigan. She also has an M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Chemistry from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She joins UC after serving for a year as Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Lyman Briggs College, Michigan State University and as Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Misericordia University.

Moonsup Hyun, Assistant Professor of Sports Management
Moonsup received a master’s degree in Sport Management from Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea and a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a concentration in Sport Management at Temple University. His research interests include sport and business analytics, behavioral economics in sport, and sport fan/participant behavior. Drawing on applied big data analytics, data visualizations, and machine learning, his studies are aimed to better understand the athletic and financial performance of athletes and professional sport teams. Moonsup’s research has been published in top-tier journals in sport management, including the Sport Management Review, Journal of Sport Management, and Managing Sport and Leisure. Prior to joining Utica College, he worked as an International Sales and Marketing Associate for Samsung Electronics and most recently served as an instructor in sport management at the Fox School of Business at Temple University.

Jalonta Jackson Glasco, Professor of Practice - MSW/Director of Fieldwork
Jalonta graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work. She immediately entered the Advanced Standing, Master of Social Work program at SIUC. After graduating with her MSW, she returned to the Chicagoland area and immediately worked as a Substance Abuse Counselor. She would later begin her career as an Adult Probation Officer at the 19th Judicial Circuit in Lake County, Illinois. She spent more than eight years supervising high risk offenders in the community. During the latter part of her career with probation services, she would become a specialized officer, specializing in the supervision of high risk women offenders. She is currently finishing her dissertation on state prison menstrual equity legislation at Auburn University in the Public Administration and Public Policy Program. She’s excited to continue her research on state prison policies impacting women and minorities. Her research interests also include historical research on African American women's clubs.

Elaine Liu, Assistant Professor of Chemistry
Elaine earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Emory University in May 2021. She also has a B.A. in Chemistry from Oberlin College and has done some graduate studies work at the University of Massachusetts. She has taught classes as a Dean’s Teaching Fellow and Adjunct Lecturer at Emory University.

Judith Manuel, Professor of Practice - Occupational Therapy
Judith comes to Utica College with degrees in Nursing, Education, Occupational Therapy from UC and a post-professional Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from the University of Utah. She has traversed the United States multiple times in her work life before choosing to return to Utica College as a Professor of Practice in the OT department. In her current role, Judith teaches classes in the Pediatric courses and documentation in the master’s program, and plans to be teaching in the post-professional and entry-level OTD programs.

Marvee Marr, Associate Professor of Management
Marvee received her Master of Business Administration (Human Resource and Marketing) from Inter American University, San Juan, Puerto Rico and her Doctorate in Business Administration (International Business and Marketing) from Argosy University, Chicago, Illinois. Previously, Marvee was a full professor and Program Chair for the Forbes School of Business and Technology at Ashford University in San Diego. She has been working in higher education for 20-plus years.
Shannon Meyers, Professor of Practice - Nursing in the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner Program
Shannon is currently in the process of earning her Doctorate of Nursing Practice at Chamberlain University. Shannon received her Master of Science in Nursing and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from SUNY Institute of Technology. Prior to being hired to her current position, Shannon was an adjunct in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Utica College.

Jonathan Mizgala, Assistant Professor of Nursing in the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner Program
Jonathan earned his DNP in Nursing in 2016 from Rush University, Chicago IL. Most recently, Jon was an adjunct lecturer of Nursing at Utica College. Jon also worked clinically as a Primary Care Provider to the local community.

Yvonne Monti, Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy
Yvonne completed her doctoral degree from Chatham University in 2020. She comes to Utica College with more than 20 years of clinical experience in the Physical Disabilities setting, with specialty areas of brain injury, stroke, and spinal cord injury. She is eager to draw upon her experience and knowledge to educate and inspire future occupational therapists.

Nicole Scienza, Assistant Professor of Psych-Child Life
Nicole was appointed in August 2021 after having been part of Utica College as a student, an adjunct professor, and then the Internship Coordinator for Psychology-Child Life. She graduated from Utica College with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and then from Walden University with a master’s degree in Early Childhood Studies before completing her Ph.D. with Walden University in 2019 in Education, with a focus on Early Childhood. Nicole gained experience working in a variety of child care programs and child care resource and referral agencies.
Elizabeth Spooner Dunn, Professor of Practice - Nursing in MSN FNP program
Elizabeth received her Master of Science in Family Nurse Practitioner from SUNY Institute of Technology, her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Russell Sage College, and her Associate of Arts and Science in Practical Nursing from Northwest Technical College. Prior to being hired to her current position, Elizabeth taught multiple clinical sections as an adjunct in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Utica College.

Chelsea Stinson, Assistant Professor of Education
Chelsea is a Ph.D. candidate (ABD) in Special Education at Syracuse University. She holds a B.S. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from SUNY Oswego, a M.S. in Inclusive Special Education from Syracuse University, as well as a C.A.S. in Disability Studies. Her teaching and research focus on the policy contexts and experiences of emergent bilingual students with and without disabilities, migrant and refugee families, and teachers at the intersections of language, race, disability, and inclusive (special) education.

Cicily Talerico, Professor of Practice - Occupational Therapy
Cicily is a proud UC alumna who has 20 years of experience working as an occupational therapist. She primarily worked with children and families, and in mental health inpatient and community settings. She also has experience working in schools, acute care hospitals and in an outpatient balance clinic. Cicily earned her Master of Occupational Therapy and her post-professional Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from A.T. Still University Mesa, Arizona. Prior to becoming a full-time faculty member, Cicily had been an adjunct instructor at Utica College for the Occupational Therapy Program and Health Sciences since 2009.

Hava Turkakin, Assistant Professor of Physics
Hava earned her M.S. and Ph.D. in Space Physics from the University of Alberta. She also has a bachelor’s degree from Black Sea Technical University in Turkey. She has taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor at both Bucknell University and the University of Central Arkansas.

Shandeepa Wickramasinghe, Assistant Professor of Mathematics
Shandeepa comes to us from SUNY Geneseo, where she was serving as a Visiting Assistant Professor. She earned her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Clarkson University in 2018. She also holds a M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Clarkson University and a B.S. in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science from Indian Academy Degree College.
2020-2021 New Faculty

Janice Ceccucci, DNP, FNP-BC, Assistant Professor of Nursing in the School of Health Professions and Education, completed her bachelor of nursing and master’s degree as a family nurse practitioner at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in an accelerated program. She earned her doctor of nursing practice at Upstate Medical University. Janice brings with her more than 15 years of experience in nursing and emergency medicine, including forensic nursing for victims of sexual assault. She has also practiced in primary care and tele-health services.

Randall “Randy” DeFranco, Professor of Practice in Construction Management in the School of Business and Justice Studies, completed his bachelor's degree in architecture from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and has more than 36 years of experience. Randy has held many positions in his field including designer, project manager, sole proprietor, construction administrator, and master planner. He has won several awards for his research and design, and is also a published author. As a facilities planning consultant, Randy led a team of professionals in the development of a methodology for facility condition assessment and long-term capital planning, which integrates physical survey by facilities experts and custom computer applications for data management. That system is currently utilized to manage U.S. federal office buildings, including the Capitol.

Martha Desmond, Professor of Practice in Nursing in the School of Health Professionals and Education, ABSN program, earned her bachelor of nursing from Molloy College and went on to complete two certificates, as well as her doctor of nursing science degree from Sage College. She brings to UC 40 years of experience, previously working as the chair of nursing at Hudson Valley Community College, and as an adjunct professor at Empire College. Martha is also published, serves on the board of the New York State Nurses Professional Organization, and is a peer reviewer for the journal, “Teaching and Learning in Nursing.”

Ethan Haymovitz, DSW, was hired as a Professor of Practice - MSW in the school of Health Professions and Education. Ethan is also the director of social work at UC. Haymovitz completed his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Vassar College, and went on to complete his masters in social work from Columbia University. He completed his doctor of social work and a certificate in Human Services Management from Kutztown University-Millersville University. Haymovitz brings years of experience working with the United Nations, the New York City Administration for Children's Services, Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, and the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health. The recipient of the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Mental Health, he is currently writing a book analyzing the interpretation of the term “mental health” across the globe.

Judith Manuel ’95 is joining UC as a Professor of Practice - Occupational Therapy in the school of Health Professions and Education. She is a proud UC alumna who also has 20 years of experience as a nurse prior to becoming an occupational therapist. She earned a post-professional Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from the University of Utah, and has worked professionally in 12 states over the years. Manuel believes that learning is a never-ending story.

Larissa J. Osterbaan, Assistant Professor of Biology in the school of Arts and Sciences, earned a bachelor's degree in biotechnology from Calvin University, then went on to complete her Ph.D. in plant pathology and plant-microbe biology from Cornell University.

Deborah Pollack, Assistant Professor of Psychology in the school of Arts and Sciences, earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Duquesne University and is currently a practicing clinician, while also serving as a clinical assistant professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University, and a clinical supervisor/instructor at Syracuse University. Honored as psychologist of the year by the Central New York Psychological Association, she is a member of several regional and national professional organizations.

Kaylee Seddio, Assistant Professor of Psychology in the school of Arts and Sciences, completed her post-doctoral fellow at the University of Maryland, College Park Child Development Lab in Bethesda. She earned her Ph.D. in educational psychology with a concentration in human development and family sciences from the University of North Texas. A certified family life educator, she specializes in family and child psychology.

Abdulbast "Abe" Abushgra, Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity, earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture engineering from the University of Nasr, his master’s in engineering management from the University of Tripoli, his master’s in urban planning from El-Mergib University and his doctoral degree in computer science and engineering from the University of Bridgeport. Abe's research interests include quantum cryptography, information security and cybersecurity. His hobbies include reading, sports and coding.

Wilfredo Alvarez, Associate Professor of Communication Arts, earned his bachelor's degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, his master’s from Florida State University and his doctoral degree from the University of Colorado. Wilfredo's research interests include intercultural communication, diversity and social justice issues. In his free time, he enjoys watching classical Hollywood films, doing CrossFit and traveling.

Elaine Brown, Professor of Practice-Nursing, earned her registered nurse diploma from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing, her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the State University of New York, her master’s in adult primary nursing from Syracuse University and her doctoral degree in nursing education and leadership from Sage Graduate School. Elaine's research interests include the use of visual art to teach observation and communication skills and tolerance of ambiguity to nursing students. Her hobbies include reading, knitting and taking scenic day trips.

Audrey Cross, Assistant Professor of Construction Management, earned her bachelor's degree in construction management from Utica College and her master’s degree in construction management from Drexel University. Audrey's research interests include methods and materials of construction and renewable energy. Her hobbies include glamping, hiking, bonfires, and woodworking/crafting.

Julian Damashek, Assistant Professor of Biology, earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Amherst College and his doctoral degree in earth system science from Stanford University. Julian's research interests include aquatic microbial ecology and nutrient cycling. In his free time, he enjoys playing music on guitar or banjo, singing, and baking sourdough bread.
Eva DiMaggio, Clinical Lab Coordinator, earned her registered nurse diploma from St. Elizabeth College of Nursing and her bachelor’s and master’s degree from Capella University. Eva's hobbies include hiking, kayaking, biking, walking, cooking, and home improvement projects.

Jonathan Gaffney, Assistant Professor of Physics, earned his bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from Bethany College, his master’s degree in physics from the University of Pittsburgh and his doctorate in physics from North Carolina State University. Jon's research interest is in physics education. His hobbies include playing board and card games, playing racquet sports, and reading old books.

Maryam Hashemian, Assistant Professor of Biology, earned her master’s degree from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences and her doctoral degree from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. Maryam's research interests include nutrition and cancer, including biomarkers and upper GI cancers, dietary patterns and upper GI cancers, food groups/items and cancer and micronutrients and cancer. Her hobbies include calligraphy, gardening, biking, and swimming.

Jing-Mao Ho, Two-Year Assistant Professor of Data Science, earned his bachelor's degree in information engineering from I-Shou University, his master’s degrees in sociology and in computer science from National Taiwan University and his doctoral degree in sociology from Cornell University. Jing-Mao's research interests include data science, computational social science, methodology, political sociology and sociology of knowledge. His hobbies include reading, jogging, and playing basketball.

John Lawless, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, earned his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and his doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. John's research focuses primarily on social-political philosophy. His hobbies include watching horror movies and coding.

Meredith Madden, Assistant Professor of Education, earned her master’s degree in urban education from Mercy College, her master’s degree in public policy from The George Washington University and her doctoral degree in cultural foundations of education from Syracuse University. She also holds a certificate of advanced study in women’s and gender studies from Syracuse University and a certificate in race and equality education from the University of Pennsylvania. Meredith's research includes foundations of education, educational equality, structural and social inequalities in education, critical pedagogies and curriculum, teacher preparation, urban education, literacy and higher education. Her hobbies include creative writing, fiction reading, baking, and watching live sports.

Kyrra Marchese, Assistant Professor of Health Studies, earned her bachelor’s in health studies from Utica College, her bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Rhode Island her master’s degree in occupational therapy from Utica College. Kyrra's research interests include pediatric development, disability awareness and advocacy. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and running.

Matthew Marmet,Assistant Professor of Management, earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Union College, his M.B.A. from Utica College and his master’s and doctoral degree in industrial/organizational psychology from the University of Connecticut. Matthew's research interests include student engagement and performance appraisal. His hobbies include riding motorcycles, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and close friends.

Ryan Miller, Two-Year Assistant Professor of Physics, earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree in physics. Ryan's research interests include galaxy structure, black holes, dark matter/energy, star formation and gravitational wave. His hobbies include soccer, fishing, and camping.

Kelly Minerva, Assistant Professor of English, earned her bachelor's degree in English and philosophy from the University of Scranton, her master’s in English from the University of Buffalo and her doctoral degree in English and South Asian studies collaborative program from the University of Toronto. Kelly's research interests include postcolonial and world literature, literary theory, South Asian literature, city literature and urban studies and rhetoric and composition. Her hobbies include knitting, photography, and traveling.

Ismael Morales, Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity, earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Bowling Green University and his master’s degree in information assurance from Syracuse University. He is also a Ph.D. candidate at Northcentral University. Ismael's research interests include cybersecurity and data science. His hobbies include long distance running and soccer.

Jae Sung Park, Assistant Professor of Therapeutic Recreation, earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in physical education from Korea University and a master’s in health education and recreation from Southern Illinois University. Jae Sung's research interests include the influence of therapeutic exercise programs for people with disabilities, therapeutic recreation intervention programs and community reintegration through therapeutic recreation. His hobbies include playing tennis and skiing.

Nile Patterson,Assistant Professor of Sociology, earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Millsaps College, and his master’s and doctoral degree in sociology from Louisiana State University. Nile's research interests include sociology of race and ethnicity, sociology of culture and sociology of education. His hobbies include creative writing, reading, playing tennis and playing video games.

Carlota Perez-Belcher, Two-Year Assistant Professor of Spanish, earned her bachelor's degree in secondary education and Spanish studies from American University and her master’s in Spanish literature from Rutgers University. Carlota's research interests include anything and everything Spanish. Her hobbies include Bridge, Mahjong, reading, traveling, sewing and watercolor.

Robert Price, Professor of Practice-Cybersecurity, earned his bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and his master’s degree in cybersecurity from Utica College. Robert's research interests include computer forensics and mobile forensics. His hobbies include landscaping and gardening, coaching baseball and being a hockey dad and sports enthusiast.

Margaret Roberts, Professor of Practice-Nursing (ABSN), will teach at UC’s Florida nursing site. She earned her registered nursing diploma from Misericordia School of Nursing, her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Toronto, her master’s and doctor of nursing practice degree from American Sentinel University. Margaret's research includes fundamental ABSN student’s confidence levels. Her hobbies include visiting with family, taking day trips, river rafting, hot air ballooning and beach days.

Shannon Schoellig, Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy, earned her associate’s degree in occupational therapy from Herkimer County Community College, her bachelor’s in health studies, her master’s in occupational therapy from Utica College and her doctoral degree in occupational therapy from Chatham University. Shannon's research interests include low vision, community based occupational therapy and the benefits of support groups. Her hobbies include going to the beach, spending time with family, and reading.

Jillian Smith, Assistant Professor of Nursing, earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Utica College and her master’s degree in nursing education from SUNY POLY. Jillian's research interests include interprofessional education, simulation and pediatrics. Her hobbies include traveling with family, watching movies, baking, and balancing life with her blended family.

Oligens Sulo, One-Year Professor of Practice-Nursing, earned his associate’s degree in nursing from Henry Ford Community College, his bachelor’s degree from Madonna University and his master’s degree in nursing from Oakland University. Oligens' research interests include fitness, nutrition, wellness, obesity, informatics/technology and simulation. His hobbies include swimming, yoga, fitness, living a healthy lifestyle, nutrition and travel.

Justine Weber, One-Year Assistant Professor of Biology, earned her bachelor’s degree in biology and environmental education from Messiah College and is currently working toward her doctoral degree in ecology at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Justine's research interests include plant ecology and conservation. Her hobbies include being outside, reading, and adventurous cooking.

Mary Cooper, Assistant Professor of Accounting, earned her Doctorate in Business Administration from Creighton University, her Master’s degree in Education from SUNY Oswego and her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Le Moyne College. Mary’s areas of interest include behavioral accounting, education and personal income taxation. In her free time, Mary enjoys camping, boating and coaching baseball and basketball.

Richard Duque, One-Year Assistant Professor of Sociology, earned his Doctorate and Master’s degrees in Sociology from Louisiana State University and his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of California. His research interests include how new integrated technologies shape social problems such as poverty, workplace violence and brain drain. In his free time, Rick enjoys hiking, playing tennis, cliff diving and world travel.

Douglas Edwards, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, earned his Doctorate and Master’s degrees in Philosophy from the University of St. Andrews and his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Kent. His research interests include metaphysics and philosophy of language. Doug’s hobbies include sports, particularly soccer and rugby, DIY projects and woodwork.

Ariel Gratch, Assistant Professor of Communications, earned his Doctorate in Communication Studies from Louisiana State University, his Master’s degree in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his Bachelor’s degree in Theatre from Kennesaw State University. In his free time, Ariel enjoys storytelling, traveling and cooking.

Margaret Hemstrought, One-Year Assistant Professor of Wellness and Adventure Education, earned her Master’s degree in Health Education from SUNY Cortland and her Bachelor’s degree in Movement and Sport Studies from Springfield College. Her research interests include staying current with trends and issues in physical education and health. In her free time, Margaret enjoys coaching, waterskiing, being active and participating in sports and reading.

Alexander Hohl, Assistant Professor of Data Science, earned his Doctorate and Master’s degrees in Geography and his Graduate Certificate in Advanced Databases and Knowledge Discovery from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and his Bachelor’s degree in Geography from the University of Zurich. Alex’s areas of interest include data science, geographic information science, high performance computing, spatial analysis and epidemiology.
Christina Huffaker, Reference Librarian and Coordinator of Access Services, earned her Master of Science in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois and her Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Le Moyne College. Her special areas of interest are accessibility, emerging technologies in resource sharing and open educational resources. Christina’s hobbies are ballet, costume design/construction, hiking, camping, knitting and museuming.

Sarah Keesom, Assistant Professor of Biology, earned her Doctorate in Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior from Indiana University and her Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Elmira College. Her research interests include animal communication, neurobiology and serotonin. In her free time, Sarah she enjoys running, hiking, baking and cooking.

Michelle Nunno-Evans, Director of Physical Therapy Clinical Education, earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Utica College and her Bachelor’s degree of Science from Ithaca College. Her research interests include stress/mental health of physical therapy students and Pro Bono physical therapy services in the community at large. Shelly is currently an executive member of the New York Physical Therapy Association.

Ugur Orak, Assistant Professor of Sociology, earned his Doctorate and Master’s degrees in Sociology from Louisiana State University and his Bachelor’s degree in System Engineering with a Minor in Business Administration from Turkish Military Academy. Ugur’s hobbies include watching documentaries, running, playing a variety of musical instruments and spending time with his son.

Andrea Palerino, Assistant Professor of Nursing, earned her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Nursing from Syracuse University and her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from West Virginia University. Her research interests include pediatrics and autism. In her free time, Andrea likes to read and go jogging.

Andrew Reeves, One-Year Assistant Professor of Mathematics, earned his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Fenn College of Engineering. Andrew enjoys reading, building LEGO and keeping up a 200 year old house.

Brandee Lee Rockefeller, Assistant Professor of Biology, earned her Doctorate in Biomedical Science from Albany Medical College, her Master’s degree in Cytotechnology and Molecular Cytology from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from The University at Albany. Her areas of research interest include basic and translational molecular and cell biology, vascular diseases, angiogenesis, cancer, therapeutic intervention and animal models of vascular diseases and cancer. In her free time, Brandee enjoys cooking, baking, spending time with family, traveling and anything outdoors.

Doreen Rogers, Assistant Professor of Nursing, earned her Doctorate of Nursing Science from Sage Graduate School, her Master’s degree in Nursing Education from Mansfield University, her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from SUNY Institute of Technology and her Associate in Nursing from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. Her research interests include professional collegiality, resilience, rural nursing, nursing retention and various components of nursing education. In her free time, Doreen enjoys reading, coaching high school girls’ varsity basketball, watching NCAA men’s and women’s basketball, and cheering for her kids, their teammates, and UC athletic teams.

Brittany Simpson, Assistant Director of Clinical Education in Physical Therapy, earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy and her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Utica College. Her research interests include clinical education. In her free time, Brittany enjoys exercise and sports.

Robert Swenszkowski, Professor of Practice-Criminal Justice, earned his Master’s degree in Criminal Justice and his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia College. His area of interest is criminal justice: leadership, ethics, & training/education. Rob’s hobbies include music, (guitars, piano, singing, and composing), recreational sport shooting, golfing and fishing.

Mark Vrooman, Assistant Professor of Management, earned his Doctorate in Leadership Studies from Franklin Pierce University, his Master’s degree in Human Resource Management from Keller Graduate School of Management, and his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Economics and Associate’s degree in Business Management from SUNY Empire State College. His special areas of interest are bullying in the workplace, qualitative research methods, interdisciplinary studies and study/theory of human resources. Mark’s hobbies include biking, fishing and kayaking.

Timothy Abraham, Assistant Professor of Wellness and Adventure Education, earned his Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois. Tim served as the sports medicine outreach coordinator at Slocum-Dickson Medical Group for the past nine years. His hobbies include beekeeping, fitness, and outdoor sports.
Melanie Blanden, One-year Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, earned her Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science from Bay Path University and her Master’s of Philosophy and Doctorate in Chemistry from Syracuse University. Her research interests include post transitional modifications of proteins and their role in diseases. In her free time, Melanie likes to exercise, read, and spend time outdoors with her daughter.
Jamie Cuda, Assistant Professor of Health Care Administration, earned her Associate’s degree in Accounting from Mohawk Valley Community College, her Bachelor’s degree in Business Public Management from SUNY Institute of Technology, her Master’s degree in Education from Oswego State University, and her Doctorate of Education in Executive Leadership from St. John Fisher College. Her research interests include program curriculum development and creating a social presence in an online course to decrease student attrition.

Samuel Ferrara, Professor of Practice-Management and Strategy, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Brockport State University, his Master’s of Business Administration from Baldwin Wallace College and his Doctorate of Organizational Studies from the University at Albany. He has 20 years of experience in the business world and is interested in corporate governance. Sam's hobbies include biking, kayaking, golfing, and playing the piano.

Maxim Gorbachevsky G'13, Professor of Practice-Cybersecurity, earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Law from Kyiv National University of Internal Affairs in Ukraine. He also earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in 2017 and his Master’s degree in Cybersecurity focused on Intelligence and Forensics in 2013 from Utica College. His past positions include adjunct lecturer at Utica College and Cybersecurity Research Consultant at Par Government.

Clem Harris, Assistant Professor of History, earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in American History from SUNY Albany, his Master’s degree in American History and his Doctorate in American History, Africana Studies, Metropolitan Studies and Public Affairs from the University of Pennsylvania. Clem's areas of interest and research also include metropolitan studies and public affairs.

Erin Kelly, Internship Program Director for the Nutrition Program, earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Binghamton State University, her Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel and her Master’s degree in Nutrition Science from Syracuse University. She is currently the owner of her nutrition company, Positive Path Nutrition LLC. In her free time, Erin enjoys running/fitness activities, rescuing dogs and gardening.
Jeffrey Lombardo, One-year Assistant Professor of Biology, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Environmental and Forest Biology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, his Master’s degree in Environmental and Plant Biology from Ohio University, and is currently completing his dissertation in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Dartmouth College. Some of his research interests include population and community ecology, plant-insect interactions, and forest insect ecology. Jeffrey's hobbies include photography and music.

Michael McCarthy, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Program Director for the Master’s in Data Science, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Science with a minor in Environmental Engineering from the United Stated Military Academy and his Master’s and Doctorate degree in Geography from The University of North Carolina Greensboro. Previously, Michael worked as an analyst at the Department of Veteran Affairs as well as commissioned officer at the US Army and Pilot. In his free time, Michael likes to travel and go running.
James Monahan, Professor of Practice in Nursing, earned his Associate’s degree in Nursing from St. Elizabeth College of Nursing and his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Nursing Education from SUNY Polytechnic. His area of interest is emergency procedure nursing. In his free time, James enjoys hiking, camping, snowshoeing and watching the Boston Red Sox.
Emerson Morse ‘05, Anatomy and Physiology Lab Coordinator, earned in Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Utica College of Syracuse University and his Master’s degree in Chemistry from Cornell University. For the past eight years, Emerson has been an adjunct professor of Biology at Utica College and is also a current family care provider at the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities. His hobbies include listening to podcasts and playing cards and tabletop games.

Tina Oyer Ponce G’09, One-year Assistant Professor of Foreign Language, earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia and her Master’s degree in Liberal Studies from Utica College. Her areas of interest include French and Japanese cultures and traveling. In her free, Tina likes to play the violin and other instruments.
Atahualpa Pinto, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and his Doctorate degree in Organic Chemistry from Syracuse University. Some areas of interest include natural products, organic chemistry and biochemistry. In his free time, Ata enjoys sports and hiking.

His research interests include improvement of law enforcement training and development of improved proficiency testing for accredited forensic laboratories. Andrew's hobbies include golfing, playing soccer and camping.

Leslie Corbo '09 and G'12, Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity, earned her Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance and her Master's degree in Cybersecurity and Intelligence from Utica College. She is currently working to earn her Doctorate in Science from Capitol College. Leslie's research focuses primarily on behavior analysis of human and machine interaction.

Donna Dolansky G'16, Professor of Practice - Accounting, earned her Bachelor's degree in Accounting from Boston College, and an MBA in General Business from Utica College. In her free time, Donna enjoys reading, cooking/baking and traveling.
Erin Dupree, Professor of Practice - Nursing and Med/Surg, joins Utica College as a full-time faculty member after working as an adjunct professor in the ABSN Program. Erin earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in nursing from SUNY Upstate Medical University. She previously taught at St. Joseph's College of Nursing for six years and most recently worked as a family nurse practitioner. In her free time, Erin enjoys running marathons, swimming, camping and spending time outdoors with her family.
Timothy J. Halter, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, earned his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from SUNY Fredonia and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from SUNY Buffalo. His specializations include the chemistry of solutions and surfaces, mechanistic studies of biomineralization, the characterization of mineral surfaces and biophysical chemistry.
Laurah Klepinger, Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology, earned her Master's degree and Ph.D. in Anthropology from Syracuse University. She is affiliated with several anthropological organizations, including the American Association of Anthropology and the Society for Medical Anthropology. Laurah's research interests include yoga and globalizations, transnational organizations, gender and sexuality, tourism and religion.
Michael Losinger, Visiting Professor of Biology, earned his Bachelor's degree in Biology from Loyola University and his Ph.D. from Binghamton University. His research interests include behavioral ecology, insect vibrational communication and animal behavior. In his free time, Michael enjoys collecting and listening to vinyl, hiking and camping.
Christopher Melenovsky, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, earned his Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from the University of Michigan and later went on to earn his Master's and Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania. He works in moral, political and legal philosophy and researched the role of social practices in shaping a moral and ethical life. Christopher's most recent publications focus on the justification of institutional rights and obligations, including property rights, legal obligations, professional responsibilities, promising and the duty to vote.
Natalie O'Neil, Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry, joins our full-time faculty after previously teaching at Utica College as an adjunct professor of Chemistry. Natalie earned her Bachelor's degree in Forensic Chemistry from Western New England University and is currently pursuing a continuing education certification in Green Chemistry and Chemical Stewards from the University of Washington. She is also a Ph.D. candidate at SUNY Albany. Natalie's research interests include synthetic inorganic green chemistry and organometallic chemistry.

Melissa Racioppa '95 and G'16, Professor of Practice - Psychology-Child Life, earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology-Child Life and her Master's degree in Health Care Administration from Utica College. Her research interests include family-centered care in community health care facilities and child development. In her free time, Melissa enjoys planning Disney vacations and camping.
Jessica Redmond, Assistant Professor of Biology/Physiology and Nutrition, earned dual Bachelor's degrees from Cornell University; one in Human Development and the other in Nutritional Sciences. She went on to earn her Master's degree in Exercise Science from George Washington University and her Ph.D. in Science Education from Syracuse University. Her research focuses on how fetal programming impacts an individual's physical activity levels, dietary preferences, body composition and various physiological variables. Jessica's hobbies include hiking, yoga and playing tennis.
Vicki Schad, Professor of Practice - Nursing, earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Nursing from Drexel University and has been a registered nurse for more than 20 years. Prior to coming to Utica College, she worked as a nurse manager of the adult inpatient psychiatric unit and crisis department at Pocono Medical Center in Pennsylvania. In her free time, Vicki enjoys spending time with her family, taking walks and going to the beach.

Daniel Tagliarina, Assistant Professor of Government and Politics, earned his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Bowling Green State University and his Master's and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Connecticut. His research interests include American constitutional law, religion and politics, law and society and human rights.

Christopher Tingley, Assistant Professor of Marketing and Strategy, earned his Bachelor's degree in Communication Arts from Gannon University and later went on to earn a Master's in Business Administration from Clarion University of Pennsylvania. He earned his Ph.D. in Business Administration from Walden University. Chris's research interests include consumer behavior, advertising and Generation Y.

Benjamin Williamson, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, earned his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from LaGrange College in Georgia and later went on to earn his Ph.D. in Pharmacy from the University of Iowa. He researches the design and synthesis of novel antibiotics to overcome resistance in bacteria. In his free time, Ben practices martial arts and enjoys cooking and reading.

Ronny L. Bull, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from SUNY IT and is pursuing a Ph.D. from Clarkson University. His research interests include cybersecurity, virtualization, networking, voice over IP and virtual network society. In his free time, Ronny enjoys visiting aquariums and playing the guitar and drums.

Kyungseok Choo, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Economic Crime, earned his Bachelor's degree in shipping management from the Korea Maritime University, his Master's degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University, and his Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University. For the past few years, he served as an Assistant Professor in the school of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Dr. Choo served as the department chair for criminal justice at Utica College from 2007 to 2008.
Harry R. Cooper, Professor of Practice - Cybersecurity, earned his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh and his Master's degree in Cybersecurity Intelligence and Forensics from Utica College. Harry is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Cybersecurity from Capitol Technology University. His research interests include cybersecurity, intelligence, freedom of information and mosaic theory. In his free time, Harry enjoys reading and technology development.
Jesse Crandall, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, earned his Bachelor's Degree from Macalester College and his Ph.D. from SUNY-ESF. Crandall is a member of the American Chemical Society. His research interests include coral reefs, undergraduate education development and communication of science to the community. Jesse's hobbies include cross-country skiing, trail running, cooking and classical violin.

Candy Grant, Associate Professor of Management and the Associate Dean of Academics in the School of Business & Justice Studies, earned her Bachelor's degree from Queens University and her Master's degree from Royal Roads University; both universities in Canada. Candy is in the final stages of earning her Ph.D. from De Montfort University in Leicester, England, expecting to officially receive her degree in January 2016.
Kyle Green, Assistant Professor of Sociology, earned his Bachelor's degree from SUNY Geneseo and his Master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. His research interests include sports, gender, media and mixed martial arts. In his spare time, Kyle enjoys working on his "Give Methods a Chance" podcast, hiking and playing basketball and tennis.

She is a member of the National Association for Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health. Donna enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing and camping.

Gabriele Moriello, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy, earned her Bachelor's degree from Ithaca College, her Master's degree from the University of Connecticut and her Doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her research interests include the attitudes of older adults on the aging process and leisure sports and recreational activities in those with neurological diagnoses. Gabriele's hobbies include biking, hiking, running, yoga and quilting.

Brett Orzechowski, Assistant Professor of Journalism, earned his Bachelor's Degree from Quinnipiac University where he later taught and co-created the Media Innovation Collaborative (MIC), a program designed to equip students in the School of Business & Communications with multimedia and entrepreneurial skills. Brett served as the CEO and publisher of The Connecticut Mirror and the Connecticut New Project, Inc. from 2013-2015.
Herbert Rau, Associate Professor of Marketing, earned his Bachelor's degree from SUNY Oneonta, his Master's degree from Nasson College and his Doctorate from Union Institute. His research interests include business and marketing. In his spare time, Herb enjoys cross-country skiing and gardening.
Mehmet Sencicek, Associate Professor of Economics, earned his international Baccalaureate degree from United World College of the Atlantic in S. Glamorgan, U.K., his Bachelor's degree from the University of Nevada-Reno and his Doctorate from City University of New York. Mehmet's research interests include the effects of devaluation on trade balance, the relationship between "inverting the classroom" and learning outcomes, and financial economics.
David Smith, Professor of Practice-Cyber Policy, earned his Bachelor's degree in Government from the University of Arizona. He went on to earn a Master's degree in Politics from the London School of Economics and another in Government from Harvard University. He earned his Ph.D. in International Relations from Ilia State University in Tbilisi, Georgia. An ambassador of the United States, David served as Chief Negotiator for Defense and Space and is an expert in U.S. strategic missile defense, arms control, European security policy, and security relationships with China, Russia and Korea. David is currently a senior fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C., and the director for the Georgian Security Analysis Center in Tbilisi, Georgia.
