In 2012, the University of California created and launched the Red Folder Program. They created a "Red Folder" or simple handout inside a red folder, as a reference guide for faculty and staff who may be noticing concerning or out of the ordinary behaviors from their students, and could use the Red Folder information as a quick reference guide to resources on campus and ways to get students help. In the years following, many other higher education institutions across the country have been producing "Red Folder" guides on their own campuses for employees who regularly interact with students.
The Utica University Red Folder contains four sections, including Recognize, Respond, Refer, and Resources. These sections identify common signs of students who may be experiencing the effects of trauma, ways to help those students in the moment, appropriate protocol to follow for referring a student to staff that is designed to work with students in need, and a list of other campus resources.
